Lichun: Why the "Start of Spring" is More Than Just a Season (The Wisdom of Tai) Hello everyone, Today, February 4th, marks Lichun (立春), the official start of spring in the traditional East Asian lunisolar calendar. While the ground might still be cold in many parts of the world, energetically, the "Yang" qi is beginning to rise. In the I Ching (Book of Changes), this period corresponds to the Tai G卦 (Hexagram 11: Peace/Pervasiveness). You may have heard the Chinese idiom Sān Yáng Kāi Tài (三阳开泰). This refers to the three unbroken "Yang" lines at the bottom of the Tai hexagram, signaling that the light is overcoming the dark. The Philosophy of "Tai" (Harmony) The structure of the Tai hexagram is fascinating: Earth is above, and Heaven is below. At first glance, this seems upside down. However, the I Ching teaches that because Heaven (energy) naturally rises and Earth (matter) naturally sinks, placing them this way ensures they meet and interact. This "intercourse" between Heaven and Earth creates a flow where everything flourishes. The lesson for us in 2026? Success comes from connection. In Business: Think of your clients first; when energy flows outward, it returns as growth. In Leadership: Support your team; when the "top" humbles itself to the "bottom," the path becomes clear. Traditions & Rituals: "Biting the Spring" Lichun is celebrated with vibrant customs meant to "capture" the spring energy: Spring Pancakes (春饼): Eating fresh sprouts and vegetables wrapped in thin pancakes, a ritual known as "Biting the Spring" (咬春). Whipping the Spring Ox (打春牛): A traditional ceremony to signal the start of the farming season and pray for a bountiful harvest. Wearing Silk Swallows: Symbolizing the messengers of spring and bringers of good luck. Wellness Tips for the Transition As the "Liver" element is most active now, here is how to stay balanced: Sleep Early, Wake Early: Align your rhythm with the sun. "Spring Cover" (春捂): Don’t ditch your winter coat too early! The early spring wind is fickle and can weaken your immunity. Eat Pungent & Warm: Incorporate chives, cilantro, and ginger to help your internal Yang energy expand. Avoid excessive salt or heavy supplements, which can "clog" the rising spring energy. Lichun is a time for sowing seeds—both in the soil and in the mind. It is the best season for learning and starting new projects. What are your intentions for this new cycle? May your year be as harmonious and prosperous as the Tai hexagram!
