[Masterclass] The Ultimate 62-Step Guide to Tai Chi's 8 Methods & 5 Steps (Ba Fa Wu Bu) with Detailed Explanations

Community Member General Discussion

Posted May 10, 2026

Hello, Tai Chi Wuji Community! We are excited to launch a comprehensive, visual masterclass on one of the most important modern Tai Chi routines: The 8 Methods and 5 Steps (Ba Fa Wu Bu / 八法五步) . This standardized routine, promoted by the Chinese Sports Bureau, distills the core martial techniques and footwork from all major Tai Chi styles into a compact and powerful form . Whether you are a beginner building a foundation or an experienced practitioner refining your understanding of "Jin" (internal energy), this guide is for you. What are the "8 Methods and 5 Steps"? Before we dive into the pictures, let's break down the name. The "8 Methods" refer to the eight primary hand techniques or energies, known as the Ba Fa (八法) . The "Five Steps" are the five directions of footwork, known as the Wu Bu (五步) . Together, they form the "Thirteen Dynamics" (Shi San Shi), the foundation of Tai Chi Chuan . The 8 Gates (Methods): These are the martial energies of the arms and body. To truly understand the meaning and application of each of the 8 Methods, we've created a dedicated dictionary page with detailed explanations. And now, we've added something new: a complete video demonstration of the Ba Fa Wu Bu form! You can watch the entire routine in motion on the same page, right alongside the definitions. 👉 Visit our Ba Fa Dictionary Page to watch the video: What is Ba Fa? (The 8 Methods) Peng (掤) - Ward Off: An expanding, outward energy, like a buoyant ball . Lu (捋) - Rollback: A yielding, redirecting energy . Ji (挤) - Press: A forward, squeezing energy . An (按) - Push: A downward, forward pressing energy . Cai (採) - Pluck: A seizing, downward energy . Lie (挒) - Split: A spiraling, dividing energy . Zhou (肘) - Elbow Strike: Energy focused through the elbow . Kao (靠) - Shoulder Strike: Energy expressed through the shoulder or back . The 5 Steps (Footwork): These represent the dynamic movement of your center . Jin (进) - Advance Tui (退) - Retreat Gu (顾) - Look Left Pan (盼) - Look Right Ding (定) - Central Equilibrium To master these techniques, you must first understand the individual energies. For a deep dive into the foundational four (Peng, Lu, Ji, An), don't miss our beginner's guide: The 8 Gates of Tai Chi: A Beginner's Guide to Peng, Lu, Ji, An Let's begin the journey from the ground up, starting with the opening posture.

Bend Knees & Press: Bend your knees and press down with your palms. (Qūxī xià àn). One of the first challenges in Tai Chi is finding "relaxation" (sōng) while maintaining structure, a skill key to mastering sōng (松) and jǐn (紧). When you press your hands down and bend your knees here, do you feel a sense of sinking energy (chén) into your feet? Where is your awareness focused—on your palms, your dantian, or your feet?

Turn Waist, Left Peng: Turn your waist, step forward, and perform Left Ward Off (Peng). (Zhuǎn yāo, zuǒ péng). It's often said in Tai Chi, "The waist is the commander" (腰为主宰). When you turn your waist to execute Peng (ward off), do you feel the movement originating from your lower back/waist, or are you leading more with your shoulder or arm? Any tips for relaxing your muscles (without going limp) in the waist while generating power?
