Fascinating post, Emma. I have definitely noticed cognitive changes after 5 years of practice. Better focus, quicker reaction times in push hands, and a general sense of mental clarity.

I have observed similar in my students. Several older students report better memory and focus after 6 months of regular practice. One 72-year-old student told me she felt sharper and more confident in daily activities.

The evidence is growing. Researchers have presented fMRI data showing increased gray matter density in Tai Chi practitioners. The hippocampus and prefrontal cortex showed the most significant differences.
