Five Essential Principles (五大要领)

Definition: The Five Essential Principles are the five core technical requirements that form the foundation of correct Tai Chi body structure. They are taught consistently across all major styles and represent the minimum structural conditions for effective practice.

The Five Principles

  1. Song (松) — Relaxation without collapse; releasing unnecessary tension while maintaining structural integrity
  2. Chen Jian Zhui Zhou (沉肩坠肘) — Sink the shoulders, drop the elbows; keeping the shoulder girdle released and the elbows heavy
  3. Han Xiong Ba Bei (含胸拔背) — Contain the chest, pluck up the back; rounding the upper back while keeping the spine extended
  4. Song Kua (松胯) — Relax the Kua; releasing the hip crease to allow weight to descend and the waist to rotate freely
  5. Xu Ling Ding Jing (虚灵顶劲) — Empty, lively energy at the crown; suspending the head as if from a string above Bai Hui

Together, these five create the structural conditions for Qi to sink to the Dan Tian, the body to root, and movement to flow from the center.
